Journey in Italy is a great journey that aims to spread well-being in the world thanks to the synergic contribution of conscientious chefs, food historians, scientists, sociologists, writers, journalists and internationally renowned designers, which includes twelve events between 14 and 18 November 2023, in eleven cities around the world, from New York to London, from Milan to Hong Kong: symposiums and narrations on the theme of the Mediterranean Diet in dialogue with traditional African and Chinese cuisines; tastings, comparisons, samplings, cooking shows, workshops, demonstrations. And great dinners (on a material, but also symbolic level).
The crux of the journey is the Glass Palace, the UN headquarters in New York, where the event will take place, organized thanks also to the support of ICE, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Polytechnic University of Milan. (The detailed programs, with all the dates in the calendar organized in London, Hong Kong, Milan, Florence, Silicon Valley, New York, Shenzhen, Rome, Beijing, Naples, Pozzuoli, are available on the website www.journeyinitaly.com).
Journey in Italy starts from the assumption that the principles of the Mediterranean Diet are a model of a beneficial and therefore “exportable” lifestyle. A diet characterized in the Mediterranean by a high consumption of whole grains, legumes, fruit, vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, fish and hard cheeses; and by a moderate consumption of red meat, dairy products and refined sugars. The benefits that derive from this diet and lifestyle for physical and mental health are universally recognized, but the benefits in terms of sustainability and regeneration are also decisive (in line, therefore, with the UN Sustainable Development Goals).
Journey in Italy therefore aims to go beyond globalization, thanks to food, making the heritage of Italian cuisine and the principles of
Mediterranean Diet, to safeguard the health, wealth, longevity, well-being and joy of people, respecting the planet, encouraging healthy lifestyle choices, always
respecting the different roots, cultures and local economies, which does not mean conforming to a sad and generalized equality, but rather opening up to a high-level comparison
level, with equal reciprocal dignity.
Therefore, Journey in Italy, with the support of the UN, concretely supports dialogue and cultural exchange on the principles of the Mediterranean Diet, on sustainability, circularity and regeneration, and on how it can be harmoniously reflected in the different cultural cuisines of the Global South and North, particularly African and Chinese ones.
