Colors and Emotions: A Scientific-Emotional Analysis

Colors, as we perceive them, do not exist in nature. Each color is, in fact, an electromagnetic wave that the human eye, through the photoreceptors of the retina, absorbs from light as a specific radiation. Based on the wavelength and intensity of this radiation, the brain receives a stimulus that is transformed into the perception of a specific color. This complex process occurs in the Limbic System, the area of the brain responsible for controlling associated memories and emotional events. Consequently, each color acts as a stimulus for the human mind, triggering specific moods.

Recent neuroscientific research has deepened the relationship between Colors and Emotions, revealing that the chromatic experience is intrinsically subjective. Each color can take on a variety of emotional meanings, different for each individual who observes it.

“Journey in Italy” Project: A Multisensory Journey

From this scientific understanding was born the idea of developing a project that uses the mixture of Colors, Flavors and Fragrances to create holistic experiences, individual emotional paths guided by the senses.

The Psychology of Color and the Subjectivity of Chromatic Experience

To arrive at the “subjectivity” of the chromatic experience inserted in a broader sensorial context, it was necessary to start from a common basis. We therefore referred to the Psychology of Color, which, although in a generic way, starts from the assumption that colors stimulate the human mind by triggering particular sensations.

Reinterpretation of Emotional Intelligences

For “Journey in Italy”, we decided to reinterpret Emotional Intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is the ability to understand and positively manage emotions to communicate effectively and empathetically. We identified seven emotional areas (Sharing, Balance, Generosity, Affectivity, Happiness, Empathy and Dream), associating them with seven Icons of Italian Flavor: Bread, Pasta, Cured Meats, Cheeses, Wine, Coffee and Ice Cream. We correlated a Color and a selection of Bondi Fragrances for food to each of these icons.

The Selected Shades

The shades selected to give life to this emotional project are:

  • BLUE: color of communication and sharing, represented by bread, symbol of the creation of unforgettable moments.
  • GREEN: brings us back to Nature and Balance, represented by pasta, made with a balance of simple and natural ingredients.
  • RED: linked to abundance and prosperity, embodied by cured meats, a symbol of generosity and sharing.
  • WHITE: celebrates purity and delicacy, associated with cheeses and milk products.
  • ORANGE: symbol of happiness and joy, represented by wine, which accompanies moments of euphoria.
  • ROSÉ RED: recalls an empathic passion, represented by coffee, shared in intimate moments.
  • VIOLET: linked to mystery and dreams, represented by ice cream, an experience of sweet and carefree pleasure.

Chromatic Narration and Bondi Fragrances

The Chromaticism of “Journey in Italy” extends beyond Emotional Intelligence. For Bondi fragrances dedicated to the person and the environment, we have created a “chromatic narrative”. Each fragrance has a story in color, based on the olfactory pyramid of the essence and the emotions it evokes. We have created a color representation of each fragrance, culminating in the five Bondi “Fifth Sense” essence boxes, all to be discovered.

This multisensory exploration celebrates the uniqueness of Italian flavors and aromas, inviting each of us to embark on a personal journey through memories and emotions. It shows how the art of color can profoundly influence our daily experiences, combining science and psychology in an unprecedented holistic experience.
